Natural Household Cleaners

Warm water: The easiest way to clean your tub is by rinsing out any excess residue using warm water. Afterwards, wipe off the moisture using a soft sponge or cotton cloth to prevent molds from forming.

White vinegar: If warm water is not enough to clean out your tub, you can move on to white vinegar for a more thorough cleaning. Mix equal parts of white vinegar and water in a spray bottle for easier application.

Spray the surface of the bathtub with the solution and let it stand for 15 to 30 minutes. Rinse out the entire tub with warm water to get rid of any remaining residue.

Baking soda: To remove even tougher stains, consider mixing the vinegar and water mixture with some baking soda. After spraying the solution onto the tub, sprinkle on some baking soda and let it bubble for a few minutes before wiping it off with a dry rag.

Lemon juice: Stubborn rust stains can be removed by using a mixture of lemon juice and borax powder. Simply sprinkle on the borax powder over the rust stain and scrub it with one half of a lemon, let it sit for a couple of minutes and then wipe it clean.

How To Use Baking Soda And Vinegar On Clogged Drains

Aside from removing surface residue, the chemical reaction between vinegar and baking soda can also be used to unclog stubborn drainpipes.

The reason why this works is because the reaction that happens between the two chemicals is enough to loosen up all the grime and filth that may have accumulated in your bathtub drain.

How To Do It

Pour a pot of boiling water down your drain and add about half a cup of baking soda to make a paste. Let the paste sit for a few minutes to loosen up the residue.

Follow up the baking soda paste with a half-and-half solution of vinegar and water. Use the plug to cover the drain and to contain the chemical reaction.

Let the solution stand for 10 to 15 minutes. Afterwards, use the remaining boiling water to flush out any remaining residue.

Now, you have a clean tub and a clean drain and all that you used were just two simple kitchen items.

How To Maintain Your Bathtub Cleaners

Storing natural bathtub cleaners differs considerably from the methods used for more toxic cleaners. For one thing, you will likely be returning these items into your pantry and keeping them alongside other food items.

However, it would be much safer to set aside the ingredients that you specifically use for cleaning and to store them away from the items you use for cooking. This way you will avoid having any dangerous accidents and will likewise have enough ingredients for the specific purpose.

You should also remember that the reason why the mixtures work is due to the chemical reaction that occurs between them. Unfortunately, this reaction only lasts for a few minutes.

This means that you will not be able to get the same result even if your use the mixture on the following day. Therefore, the best way to maintain the potency of your natural bathtub cleaners is by storing them individually instead of mixing them in a single container.

They will not keep the same way that a conventional cleaner will if kept in a bottle. An alkaline such as baking soda should be kept away from an acid like vinegar unless you actually need that explosive reaction to help you get rid of some grime.

Once you do need that natural fizz to get rid of some accumulated bathtub gunk. Simply, reach for your ingredients and mix them up when the time is right.

Precautions To Take

Only use soft sponges, microfiber or cotton cloths to wipe your bathtub. Overly abrasive brushes or steel wool can scratch the surface of the tub and cause permanent damage.

While vinegar and baking soda might be natural and safe on their own, their chemical reaction can still release toxic fumes into the air. If possible, open up a window or door and keep the bathroom well-ventilated while you work.

Wear a face mask to protect yourself from inhaling toxic fumes. Similarly, take care to protect your skin from being burned by wearing gloves.

Though you might consider cleaning in the nude while you are in the bathroom, it is better if you wear some clothes to protect your skin. Old clothes would be the ideal garments to wear since some of the ingredients can cause the fabric to fade or bleed.

Lastly, always wipe away remaining moisture after the final rinse. This will ensure that no mold or rust will build up immediately after you have cleaned your bathtub.

In the end, the best way to keep your tub sparkling and fresh is by cleaning it out after every use. Though it might seem like another chore after a stressful day, it will pay off in the end.
